One that I think will pay off eventually, if not in monetary, career evolving, large paycheck sort of way, then in look what mommy did, you’re never too old to try, don’t ever give up, realize your dreams sort of way.
What am I doing? I am going to go back to school. Yup. Fun stuff right? 30-something momma of 4, trading in her nursing bras and Fisher Price Little People for textbooks, cram sessions and test anxiety.
Not that I haven’t had cram sessions and test anxiety before, they just came in the form of where-is-that-dang-parenting-book, how-do-I-know-this-poop-is-normal sort of cram sessions and please let the pediatrician tell me he’s normal for wanting to eat my shirt test anxiety.
I did attempt to go back to college some 5 years ago when Shorty was small but when we moved to the boonies, I had to give it up for a time. That and I was very unsettled about what I wanted to do. I was constantly hoping and praying that the community college I was attending would have a decent English or Journalism program but alas none ever came. But things have changed. Yippee! Right?
So how do I hope this will pay off? Bug asked me today while I was registering for my pin for the FASFA, why I was going back to school. I had to answer with a question… “Why not?” I asked him back. He just shrugged. I guess he doesn’t get the whole the world is your oyster, and your dreams are what you make of them thing yet. It’s ok.
I understand my writing does not impress him, he’s not impressed that I freelance for the local community newspaper. He’s only 11, so I don’t think I can expect much out of him in that respect. I am hoping that my tenacity to not give up, and keep reaching for my goals (even if they are 13 years old), gives him the push he and the other kids will need to go after theirs. I am not out to be the oldest living college grad or anything like that.
This is an important lesson for the kids to learn. You can teach an old mom new tricks.
You can start down one road, detour for a bit and enjoy the scenery and come back to road you were originally on keep on with your travels. A detour doesn’t mean the end of your travel, it just means an unscheduled rerouting.
That’s what happened to me and now I am looking forward to getting back on the main road… I’ve picked up a few travelers along the way too. They make the trip way more interesting.
Here’s hoping we travel on with the top down, the wind in our hair, and the radio blasting to schoolhouse rock!
