Phoenix Village Academy in Ohio.
I read THIS a while ago and thought… YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING. And even more embarrassing, The school is in my home state. Lovely. Way to give the Midwest a bad name.
This charter school that apparently emphasizes in African studies served students a teaspoon of GIN mixed with water during a ceremony that was representative of a rite of passage graduation ceremony.
So says Kwa David Whitaker, “We could have put pepper in the water,” he said. “If someone is concerned about it, obviously it is not the best thing to do.”
Joking right? I mean they honestly thought that there would be no one who had a problem with this.
I don’t really care if this was a demonstration of an ancient ritual or not. You don’t see other schools creating a mock beheading when discussing the history of crime and executions. I know, graphic and disturbing as that might be, I equate seeing my would-be sixth grader taking part in something like this just as disturbing. I know its not a lot of alcohol but the school has no right in my book, to subject a child, mine or otherwise to underage drinking.
Can we say, Contributing to the delinquency?
In a time when zero tolerance is popular for students who disregard the rules, shouldn’t zero tolerance be just as popular for the administration and teachers as well?
This parent would hope so.
Where do you weigh in? Was the school within its rights to perform this type of demonstration all in the name of history?
Or should they go the way of the guillotine for such behavior?

Yikes! I can’t believe they did that. I would have been outraged if it was my child that they did that little demonstration with!
I can’t believe that any of you would make such a big deal over this. Yes, it’s part of a ritual that encourages the students to be honest and truthful. When the students detected the foreign substance they spit it out right away. Most children aren’t even honest with their own parents much less a teacher. The ritual teaches honesty so don’t condemn an african american educator for bringing african rituals to our african children. Have you all lost your minds?
This has absolutely NOTHING to do with honesty, African heritage, etc. The problem with this is that children were given hard liquor!!
Even if it’s just a teaspoon, it could still have dire effects on little bodies, not to mention that it’s F#cking illegal!!!
Hello?! I would have all of their jobs and sued the hell out of that school. Morons.
Since you obviously have no idea what happened, let me tell you. The amount of alcohol was minimal. Half a teaspoon to be correct. The effects of that much alcohol on the body cannot even be measured but the fact is they never ingested alcohol. THE CHILDREN SPIT THE SOLUTION OUT!!! How many parents or grandparents have rubbed liquor on a babies gums to quite them down or put them to sleep? Amy, get off your high horse, you’re breaking it’s back. Most African Americans cannot tell you what part of that continent their ancestors came from because they don’t know. Furthermore, if you ask a Caucasian person, they can tell you by country where they come from. Recognize that if you are not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. Please astound me with your amazing contributions to the African American community and what help if any you’ve given to African American children in learning where they come from. Your words speak volumes as to how brainwashed you really are. Do people in France damage their children’s bodies by allowing them to drink wine? Don’t forget, THEY SPIT THE “HARD LIQUOR” OUT. DON’T SPEAK ON WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW. YOUR IGNORANCE WILL ALWAYS SHINE THROUGH.
