We live in a very rural area… (think Amish buggies) and going anywhere can easily be a 30 minute trip one way. We bring along the hand held games whenever possible but I wanted my children to be exercising more than their fingers…
That’s when I discovered Audible.com. I always encourage the kids to read and we are a well known group at our local library but my daughter will sometimes complain that she can’t read in the car or it bothers her eyes to do it for long periods of time.
Audible.com is a great place to buy audio books but now they have a place just for kids.
You can search the site by category, age or grade. For my kids, I have accelerated readers so I would go up a grade and find books that are more at their level. You can create a profile for yourself and your kids can each create a profile as well and if you aren’t sure if a book is for you or not, you can listen to a portion of it before you buy.
They have a bargain bin section where downloads are only $.99 and even a freebie section. The parenting and teacher section has everything from discipline to dyslexia so parents and teachers can learn to better direct kids and help them succeed. This is an added bonus for me because I can get downloads for myself and save some money on the kids selections if I need to.
I think as summer looms closer and we can get out to do more, kids audible will be a must stop on our list of things to bring along. We can download the stories onto mp3 players, iPods and even CD’s (for my kids who don’t yet have an mp3).
So if we don’t have time to make it to a library before the trip, we can at least get some great stories to listen to along the way!
