The Day After Christmas

The hype is finally over. Kids have their gifts, our house is a disaster, and we’re a little poorer for it all.

But I’m not looking at that right now.

Not here. No way. I’m not looking at the massive loads of laundry right now or the mess in my kitchen, or even the wrapping paper and packaging still on my living room floor or even the rain outside (yeah. Christmas rain. That’s fun).

Nope. Instead, I’m looking at my home’s version of Peace on Earth and Goodwill towards men.

For instance, I have heard NO FIGHTING TODAY. (now that the words are on screen, I’m waiting to eat my words…) Nope. Still none.

Children are sharing. Bug offered up his old Game Boy when Shorty couldn’t find his to play the new games they got from their Papa’s house.

Peanut is not fighting or hitting anyone today. AND… as if that wasn’t fabulous enough, NO ONE is playing with his toys, which usually prompts the hitting.

No one has asked for food, drink, or even clothes today. Apparently we’re all happy to live off our Christmas presents and wear our pajamas.

All in all, this is as peaceful as my house could hope to get. It started last night when we came home from my dad’s house. Kids immediately opened their packages and started playing. I had to pry an electronic Backhoe from Peanut and even considered letting him sleep with it because he really hated to let it go. The peace went on into morning and now… Ahhhh do you hear it? Neither do I and it’s wonderful.

And since I’m one to not ruin a good thing, I am very seriously considering not getting up and doing anything today because Heaven Forbid I ruin a good thing by making them eat, dress, or talk to me or each other. THAT. COULD. BE. AWFUL.

I think I’m going to turn the day after Christmas into a holiday. You can choose to celebrate it or not but here in my little corner of the world, it’s my favorite day of the year. I am no longer looking forward to Christmas, birthdays, or even the first day of school…

Hmm that might be going to far.

OK, I still look forward to the first day of school. Let’s be realistic. That’s a MAJOR HOLIDAY.

So from my house full of children to yours… May your Day after Christmas be merry and quiet.
