Re-Introducing Family Game Night

I have so many wonderful memories of our family sitting around the table, playing games. While not limited to holidays, our biggest game nights were always around Christmas and New Years, when dad was home and everyone was around. We’d pull out the playing cards for some very competitive hands of Spades or flip open the Monopoly board and play past midnight. I’m the oldest of 8 children so we always had plenty of players and my siblings could play both of the aforementioned games (among many others!) by the time they were six! Other games we enjoyed as a family were Boggle, Scrabble, Phase Ten, Uno, and of course, Go Fish. Puzzles were another huge family tradition.

apples_to_apples_juniorSince I’ve been married to a man whose family also loves games I’ve been introduced to Balderdash, Cranium, Clue, Buzz Word, and Apples to Apples. My favorite of these is Apples to Apples. Even the junior edition is addicting! I played it with my folks, 7 siblings and some of their girlfriends, and my husband over Christmas and we had a BLAST! The more people, the more fun you’ll have!

I’m a big believer in playing games together as a family, which is why I’m excited to see TimeToPlaymag.com introduce Family Game Night. Meet toy expert, John Silver, the guy behind FGN, and take a stroll down memory lane while reading his list of classic games, listed by date of 1st Edition! Which of these games does your family enjoy?

TimeToPlaymag is teaming up with ResourcefulMommy to host a Family Game Night Twitter Party! We’ll tweet with Jim Silver as he tells us all about the best games and answers our questions about games, toys, and family fun! There will be prizes, (Games, what else?!?!) so hurry up and RSVP for the party and be sure to join us for a great discussion!

In these trying economic times, leaving the house for entertainment has become hard on the pocketbook. More and more families are opting to stay home, but what is there to do at home? Watch TV? No! Play games! That’s right, pull the dusty boxes off the shelf and sit around the table together. Or, go out and find some exciting new games! It’s a great way to get some interaction without pressure. Try it; you’ll be laughing and having a good time before you know it!
