Just visiting from WAHM.com ... I don't disagree with you that sex is everywhere and I share your objection to these tween shows on channels like Disney, but how is refusing to let our daughters dress in what they want going to stop them from exploring or from having all this pro-sex content thrown at them? Do you think that their longer skirts are shielding them from the talk amongst their peers or from seeing advertisements on the sides of public transportation buses? Finally, the USA is MUCH MUCH MUCH more conservative than Canada and much of Europe and this kind of clothing censoring only perpetuates that image of 'Quaker conservatism'.

Fortunately my daughter is only 7 months old so I have a few years before I have to deal with this and perhaps by then the Disney channel will have gone back to showing age appropriate content.

Great site - I'm glad to have clicked on your sig line!

Every time I pass the girl's departments in stores I am very grateful I don't have girls. I have no idea how moms find decent clothes for their girls/tweens.

I am entirely disgusted every time I see a toddler-young teen in a bikini. WTH???? Why on earth would a mother think that's cute? Why?

Oh, I could go on for days, but I'll shut it and let someone else talk!

I am less than thrilled with the over-sexualization going on for kids in general these days, let alone tweens and teens. I have a 3 daughters, two of which are in these brackets at 9 and 14. I am HORRIFIED at some of the shows and things marketed nowadays. Case and point,I'm doing laundry after "grandma" visits, and I discover the "underwear" she bought them - cutie boy shorts in colors, sparkles, designs, you name it. WTF? Why on earth, "grandma," would you give my daughters underwear like that? I prefer normal everyday Hanes for them (and me), no cutesy underwear in the least. Needless to say, I've confiscated it and told her not to buy them any clothes without consulting me first. It isn't the first time, either.

Like a HAWK we need to watch them. Have you seen the new clothing marketed for them by Miley Cyrus? Trash! "Pleather" leggings *gag*

Great post.

As for Disney, I remember a Hannah Montanna where Hannah and her friend approached a boy saying they'd heard he was a good kisser. WTF! The show is geared to kids 12 and under.

At the Disney awards, Miley Cyrus did part of her act humping a stripper pole. Definitely unacceptable.

As my wife says; with boys, you have to worry about one dick. With girls, you have to worry about every dick in town.

I love this post. I have a 12 year old daughter, and shopping for clothes is a nightmare. And as Katja mentioned in her comment, the Halloween costumes were awful, completely slutty. They looked more like something fun to wear in the bedroom than something I would want to send my daughter out in for Halloween. Yes, sex is everywhere, and I do use what we come across as "teaching tools". It's more practical than trying to hide it.

Totally agree with you on this!!! And I'm not a prude either. But when
I can't find a frickin' skirt at Target that's not but an inch from my daughter's privates, for goodness sakes!!! I mean, seriously, people, I shouldn't have to dress my daughter like a Quaker just to ensure she's not being ogled by the janitor.

And, Katja, I was just as appalled at the Halloween costume selection. And, honestly, found myself standing in front of that aisle with my mouth literally hanging open for, like, 20 minutes 'cause I just could not believe this was ok. It was practically child porn!!

So, I say good for you guys on imposing the no short skirts and no bare midriffs rule. It may not be for everyone. It may not work for everyone. But, dammit, it's worth it in so many ways to at least try.

Awesome post! And I agree - it is much better to have the discussion than ignore - and while rules are good (we have them too), it is even better when kids themselves learn to control it. I was disgusted by all the "naughty" Halloween costumes in size 6-8 the past Halloween, and how Halloween is a perfect way for girls young and old to be a slut for a day. Why women, why?
