Sure, I likely won’t know anyone who is in a mob that is cleverly disguised as a coffee importing business and I don’t see any of my friends or family losing their memory and starting a whole new life as a mob hit man but you never know.
Still, when the soaps imitate life, I don’t think that any of them can do it better than General Hospital can. I’ve been touched by GH’s story lines that have tackled AIDS, Cancer, life threatening illnesses (Don’t forget about Maxi being a Heart Transplant recipient; that’s especially close to my own heart, you know) and now Domestic Abuse.
If you haven’t been following the show or you’re not a fan, watching the Kristina/Ethan/Kiefer abuse story should be enough to get you started!
Why?
Well, for one – abuse is happening to young women everywhere. It’s a hard story to write because it is so real and so volatile. Plus, I don’t see any part of the story line that could not ACTUALLY be happening to someone, somewhere.
The fact that Kristina lied about her attacker isn’t far fetched either. Women lie all the time about who hurt them or how they got in an effort to keep themselves from getting hurt again.
I am giving General Hospital a standing ovation for taking on a very difficult and heated topic such as domestic abuse. The story line is sure to heat up and I cannot wait to see how they present all sides of this story (plus I really want to see the actual attacker get his A$$ kicked).
I won’t spoil the plot for you except to say that I think the truth will come out eventually (it always does right?) I just hope it’s sooner and not later. I also hope that Kristina gets away from this person before he puts his hands on her and hurts her again.
It’s stories like this one that make us love our soap operas and root for the characters we love. Sometimes the stories are far fetched (evil grandmother/witch conspiring to fake paternity just to have an heir to her family?) but sometimes, they surprise and hit close to home with stories that we can relate to and feel for and love because we know that it’s a real concern in the real world.
