Tell Me About Yourself

Tell Me About Yourself

I’ve been blogging for almost four years now. I’ve never thought too much about who my readers were because until this last year, it’s just been me. Talking about kids. And stuff (and then you all found me!)

Blogging is a lot like raising kids I think. Just like your baby starts out little and helpless, totally depending on you and then growing into someone all their own and taking on a life of their own, I really think that if done right, a blog will do the same. You give birth to it and nurture it, and with some love and a lot of attention, it grows to be something wonderful and amazing that you are truly proud of.

Over time, my readers have taught me things about myself, blogging and community, but I know there’s room for growth. I know there are a lot of people who read The Guilty Parent who never, ever comment. That’s fine, I do that with some blogs too but I still want to know more about my silent and my vocal readers. I think that if I’m going to continue to be a good “guilty parent” I need to find out more about who’s reading now because I know you’ve all changed and grown along with the blog and I know that there are a lot of new faces out there too!

I’ve come up with a reader survey that I’d love for you to take. It’s a mix of basic demographics as well as questions that will help me make some decisions about the future of The Guilty Parent in terms of content and the companies I work with. All the information that you give me is confidential. Shoot. I don’t even know your name unless you decide to tell me.

The goal is to make sure that when you visit, you enjoy it here and you like what I have to say. I don’t want to waste your time by providing content that doesn’t matter to YOU.

So please take a few minutes to participate in the survey and share your thoughts (I give you space for that too!)

I’ll post the results of the survey later next month!

Thank you for visiting. I love having new readers so please feel free to join the discussions! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Come back soon!!

Fabulous Finds from BlogHer ‘09

Since I missed the Type-A Mom conference, my brain is still stuck in BlogHer 09 mode, which is fine by me but I think the family is a little sick of hearing about it.

So I’m going to spread the love to you!

Just a portion of the sea of women bloggers who are connected, smart, & tech savvy

Just a portion of the sea of women bloggers who are connected, smart, & tech savvy

Thanks to MothersClick, who helped sponsor my trip to BlogHer, I was able to meet and talk with a number of different people, women, bloggers, and companies. As someone who LOVES to talk… this was like dying and going to Conversation Heaven. It’s also a bit like dying and going to Geek Heaven (I’ve never seen so many BlackBerries, iPhones, PC laptops and Macs all in one place) but that’s a post for another day!

As I was saying, I conversed… A LOT. You would think my jaw was hurting from it all but not me! I’m made of tough stock! Even almost three months after the conference, I’m still making connections with brands and people that I look forward to working more with in the future. Unfortunately it can be difficult to remember and keep track of every company so I’ve compiled a list (I may need to come back and do a second post if I leave some brands out) of the companies I enjoyed talking to and learning more about.

Scotch Brite – They have a new line of Greener Clean products that I am completely Ga-Ga over! It might help that I’ve almost always used the Scotch Brite brands in my home for cleaning so seeing their Eco-Friendly products was very refreshing. One of the swag bags had a number of Scotch Brite Greener Clean products in it and I’ve tried out every one of the products. Of the Greener Clean items I received, my favorites are:

  • Greener Clean Natural Bamboo Cleaning Cloth
  • Greener Clean Soap Loaded Scrubbers
  • Greener Clean Biodegradable Absorbant Sponge
  • Greener Clean Biodegradable Expanding Soft Sponge (these remind me of those sponge toy capsules that you buy for the kids that “grow” when you get them wet. It was fun to just run them under water and watch them expand in my hand!)

Suave Professionals – These gals had a booth dedicated to making our hair look better at BlogHer. They were styling, crimping, straightening and curling every day! I stopped by the booth because I use Suave at home for myself and the kids (I prefer the Suave Radiant Brunette Shampoo & Conditioner) becuase they work just as well as other, pricier brands. I’ll be honest, I have a curl/frizz issue. If you saw me at BlogHer and I was in the exhibitors area, my hair was UP simply because I didn’t want to expose everyone to the unruliness of my hair. I stopped by simply to find out if they had anything… ANYTHING that would help me (humidity and curly hair ARE NOT FRIENDS). The wonderful girls introduced me to the Suave Professionals Sleek Anti-Frizz Cream.BANG BABY! I could use it whether I was straightening it out or letting the lovely curls show. The Anti-Frizz Cream is now a staple in the Guilty Parent household.

Gerber – The pioneers of baby and toddler nutrition were kind enough to have samples of some of their preschool food lines available. I found out during my discussion with them that since they’ve seen so much success with the Gerber Graduates lines of foods, that they’ve been moving into the preschool space, which is a smart move in my opinion since this is the age when nutritious meals and snacks are going to be on every mom’s mind as their little ones head off to preschool programs that require kids to have nutritious and healthy meals. I took home some Gerber Graduates Fruit Twists and Chewy Granola Bars for Peanut to try since he was a huge fan of the fruit puffs as a toddler. I was not at all surprised that he LOVED these healthy snacks.

Dove – I refuse to admit that I sweat… but since we’re talking about it, I got the chance to try the Dove Clinical Protection Visibly Smooth Deodorant. This might be too personal for some of ya’ll so feel free to read past this… Can I just say that I love how it smells? You know how some people will do a “sniff test” to see how fresh or not fresh they are? OK, well I do the sniff test simply to smell the Dove Clinical Protection Deodorant Wild Rose scent. It’s just girly enough for me and not overpowering. I typically prefer deodorant that smells like baby powder(chalk it up to too many years changing diapers) so the Wild Rose scent is a nice change and I actually stay dry. This might sound like a commercial (I assure you no one is paying me to say this) but I HATE SWEATING, even just a little and the Clinical Protection really keeps me dry through the day.

Bounce Dryer Bar – Yes, you’ve probably seen the ads here at The Guilty Parent promoting the Bounce Dryer Bar but even before I placed the ads, I was psyched to try out this nifty little dryer tool. I think everyone at BlogHer got a sample of the Bounce Dryer Bars, but I may be the most tickled person to see this kind of innovative answer to the dryer sheet. I have a love-hate relationship with dryer sheets mostly because I’m not the only one doing laundry anymore. Yes. I am the mean mom who makes the kids fold clothes. I swear I nearly kissed the man at the Bounce Booth at BlogHer when I saw the dryer bars. I no longer have wayward dryer sheets hanging out in my clothes or the couch where the kids fold the laundry and forget to the throw the dryer sheets away after they’ve finished folding a basket. I could go on here but you get the picture.

As I continue to wear out other samples and products that I received at BlogHer 2009, I’ll update as needed.

BlogHer was an amazing, fun, and truly exhilerating trip that couldn’t have happened without the help of MothersClick as my sponsor and for that, I owe them a huge thank you. I’ve brought back some wonderful information that I’ll continue to share with the MothersClick community as well as my readers here in the coming months. The one regret is not taking MORE pictures.

If you went to BlogHer, what were some of your favorite finds?

Feel free to leave a comment or links to any posts you’ve written about some of the great things you’ve discovered. I’d love to hear about them (and maybe compare notes!)

Ignorance, Failure, Lack of Responsibility and The Role Our Schools Play

Ignorance, Failure, Lack of Responsibility and The Role Our Schools Play

I’ve given careful consideration before writing this post, mostly because while it’s not my intention to offend or stir up controversy, this is and always will be… my blog. Which means if you don’t like what I’m writing, you’re not being forced to keep reading. Unless you’re having a train wreck moment and simply can’t look away, then by all means ogle a little longer why don’t you?

My sister made the comment over the weekend that I could have just kissed her for. She told me how disappointed she was in her son’s school over their decision not to show President Obama’s speech on September 8th. First of all, we’re not sure that the school didn’t show the students the speech but according to my nephew, he didn’t see the speech. IM002140

I, on the other hand, know my kids didn’t see the speech because we talked about it. And, like my sister, I am very disappointed as well. Possibly even angered by it. See, I like my children’s school district but in the six years we’ve lived here and my kids have attended it, I’ve been let down by some of their decisions and practices. It came to a head for me two years ago when I blogged about how my son’s middle school showed a blatant disrespect for our nation’s capital, the monuments and how they completely missed so many important and teachable moments. Well, it seems that they’ve missed another one. Honestly? I could have sworn that part of the school’s job was to educate them.

Unfortunately they totally missed the bus on this one.

In all honesty, I should have written this post two weeks ago when I first thought that the school district may not show the President’s education speech but silly me, I hoped our district wouldn’t be so apathetic in letting our kids see something that could motivate and move them in a positive way. I understand that there was unrest over what the speech might actually be about but when you have the chance to read the speech before it airs and see that there is no agenda other than to motivate and engage our kid in their own futures then there’s no excuse for that kind of ignorance.

But that’s bad. We can’t do that. It would be… asking them to be responsible and Lord knows that we’ve created a generation of kids who have become privileged in just about every aspect of their lives. Their education should be no different right?

WRONG.

If you ask me and a lot of other wise parents, our kids needed to hear this speech.

It’s true. You know it is. You’ve seen those kids; the ones that could care less if they make it to school or if they do go, what happens in their day once they get there. So what would have happened if our kids would have heard the President tell them that they can do great things but they must be responsible for that greatness.

My God.

I shudder to think how successful they could be if they heard that and believed it.

I mean heaven forbid we actually expect our kids to take responsibility for their successes or failures. We feel guilty when they don’t do well and understandably so, but do we ever stop and think that maybe, just MAYBE, we should put the guilt back on them and let them fail? I mean what would be so wrong with that? They might learn something from it.

Failing sucks. It’s easy to do but it’s no damn fun.

In none of my years of school did anyone say that I could “write my own destiny”.

Every single one of you has something you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide.

I would have loved to hear that. I would have loved to know that I was good at something, and that it was OK for me to fail every now and then because it meant I’d be successful somewhere else.

I’m trying to find the problem that people are having with President Obama’s speech because I’m not seeing anything bad or wrong or offensive about it.

There are a lot of kids who never hear that they are good at something. There are millions of kids who don’t even know that they have a destiny let alone that they can write it!

The schools and districts that didn’t show the speech missed the boat on giving the kids that are at risk for dropping out by the time they hit high school a reason to stay and work hard. They missed the boat on allowing them to hear and see a landmark speech that was created just. for. them. It wasn’t about anything else except for the opportunities they have available to them if they really wanted it.

I read the President’s speech the night before it aired because I was curious. I wasn’t scared about what might be on the speech but I did want to know what my kids might be hearing because it could open up the door for some excellent conversations with them.

To prove my point, the night before the speech, Bug and I were discussing my frustrations over why everyone seemed so up in arms about a speech they haven’t even heard yet. I told him that the school might not let him watch it and after being a bit upset over that thought, he asked me to read some of the speech to him, since I was tweeting, reading and talking about it. After listening to me read a portion of it, he stops me and tells me this, if there was ever a doubt in my mind that my son wouldn’t understand what the President was trying to tell him, those thoughts were gone in that very moment.

If you’re a parent like me, and most are better than me… hence the name “the guilty parent”, then you have probably talked your child about working hard and doing well in school BUT… let the President tell them that and it might not go in one ear and out the other for a change.

Maybe the thing that bothers me most is that we have thousands of schools looking for and taking the stimulus handouts and grants from the government so that they can give kids the tools they need to succeed but when it comes to letting our nation’s leader (like him or not) tell the kids that all the tools in the world won’t matter if they don’t show up and work hard for what they want…

they’ve completely failed on their responsibility to give my children ALL the tools they need to succeed.

Review: Paper Culture Stationery

Review: Paper Culture Stationery

Do you ever stand in the stationary isle at the store and pour over the pretty papers, envelopes and letterhead?

paperculture logoNo? OK… maybe it’s just me then but I have a paper fetish. It’s bad. Like, I-don’t-need-paper-anymore-because-everything-I-do-is-pretty-much-done-electronically-but-I-buy-the-paper-and-envelopes-anyway Bad. That’s an obsession. And please don’t make me tell you how I love the smell of paper. That borders on crazy talk.

So when I was asked by the Momfluence team if I wanted to review some of the modern stationery from Paper Culture, of course I jumped at the chance.

One of the samples I received. I loved the modern design!

One of the samples I received. I loved the modern design!

I received an assortment of their invitations and cards to review. I loved how each card I received wasn’t thin or flimsy like other invitations or cards I’ve purchased. Each card was whimsical yet modern in the design.

premium quality, eco-friendly stationery is becoming an important part of my stationery fetish as well. I know that stationery doesn’t have to harm the planet and so I’m on the look out for paper and cards that I can love and will love the planet back.

I think that whether or not you’re looking for kids’ birthday party invitations or just gorgeous cards that makes even the biggest paper and stationery lover go gaga, Paper Culture is a stationery option not to be overlooked.

Special thanks to Momfluence and Paper Culture for the opportunity to review the cards and invitations.

Build-A-Bear Offers Unforgettable Family Fun for Less This Month

I have a friend who celebrates the end of the school year with her daughters by heading to their local Build-A-Bear Workshop and letting each of the girls (all 3 of them!) choose a bear and outfit. I think this is a great way to celebrate the end of the school year and congratulate the girls on a job well done.

However, I think for moms like me who are sending their babies off to school or preschool for the first time now is the perfect time to visit a Build-A-Bear Workshop and so do the fun people at Build-A-Bear.

make and dressAll August long, Build-A-Bear is offering a special deal: Come into any Build-A-Bear Workshop and purchase any bear, hanging outfit and shoes for only $29.99.

If you’re a Build-A-Bear family like we are, how can you resist that deal?

As part of their August promotion, Build-A-Bear sent Peanut a new friend (the black bear front left). Peanut has named him Cup-Cup. Not sure how he picked out that name but the bear hasn’t complained any.

Since we obviously adore Build-A-Bear and their furry friends, this is one promotion, I can get behind. The kids enjoy going from station to station and picking out everything from the kind of friend they want to their new pal’s accessories and outfits. It’s very easy to see why my friend and her girls make visiting a Build-A-Bear workshop a yearly tradition.

There’s still time to take advantage of the Build-A-Bear $29.99 special before August is over (I apologize for not getting this posted sooner but as you know recent events have put me a bit behind).

Whether you end the school year with a new friend or start it with one, this an excellent way to celebrate making new friends!
